A true performer, even when he doesn't know the lyrics. I've watched this cover countless times and I still can't get over it. He leaves me speechless every time watch this video, not only because of his perfect face, hair, and smile, but his vocals and the way he switches the song up to make it his own. Miguel performed this cover a few months ago at SWSW, which seemed like something he did just for fun. BUT I want an official cover because, why not? Think about how magical it would be if Miguel got in a studio and made it his own masterpiece. Rihanna killed this song, but I have to say Miguel's cover might have took it to another level.
The 2016 Freshman Class is here and I actually like some of the artists up there. It's a very young crowd this year but it's not too bad. Of course there are those who are disappointed, extremely happy (which no one ever is), or has mixed feelings about this years list. I'm always in the mixed feelings crowd. Denzel Curry is one of my favorite artists, so I was super excited to see him on the cover. I love how Denzel's flow perfectly fits with his intense and hardcore style. But him along with G Herbo are the only artists on the cover that I listen to on a regular basis. I'm not an avid listener of Lil Yachty and Uzi, but I love that they put me in a happy mood when I do listen to them. Now if there's anyone who should've made the list, it's definitely Flatbush Zombies. It's pretty disappointing to not see them on the list again, especially after how well their debut album has been doing. These guys are too talented so I'm not sure why it keeps going unnoticed, but I know they'll get their real shine soon. Now check out the cover shoot for XXL's new wave of artists.
It's been almost a year since we've heard any new music from Alicia Keys. But no worries, she just released her new single, In Common which will appear on her new album that's set to release later this year. It's kinda crazy to think Alicia's last album dropped 4 years ago, so I'm pretty excited to see what she has in store for her fans this year.
So, Kali Uchis released a new summer jam just a few weeks ago. I randomly came across the song on Tidal the other day, and it's been on repeat since. I will say I'm not really a fan of Vince Staples verse, just because I don't think it fits for the song. Uchis just released the self-directed music video, which features her using a man as a seat as Steve Lacy from The Internet and Vince Staples search for her through a bunch of lookalikes. Kali is honestly too good with visuals because the song is even better with the video. Check it out below!
It's been two years since Flatbush ZOMBiES released their last project and I'll admit, I was getting annoyed with them touring and performing the same songs from D.R.U.G.S or BetterOffDead because I was ready for something new. But they did say they'd be taking their time, and with the release of their debut album recently, it's pretty clear these guys had been working on this for a minute now. After listening to the first song, I already knew this album was gold. My favorite song keeps changing but, I currently have Bounce, This Is It, and Trade-Off on repeat. Safe to say 3001: A Laced Odyssey was definitely worth the wait. Take a listen to one of my favorites below!
SHE'S BACK! I know I'm not the only one whose been religiously stalking her Instagram the past couple of months to see if she'd post something.. anything at that. And today, she finally blessed my TL with pictures for a new song "Formation". This is only Beyonce's second video after a pretty quiet 2015, and the visuals are just incomparable. But most importantly, this is a song celebrating and embracing blackness. Watch the levels.
Okay, so we know OVO Sound has a lot of new projects in store this year from Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, but it looks like Majid Jordan is up first. The OVO Sound duo just released their latest single "King City" and I'm already obsessed with it. This song gives you a very smooth and gentle vibe from their electro-R&B sound. The self titled debut album will release February 5th, but in the meantime take a listen to what I think will be their newest hit.
Another relationship song we can relate to. The slow burner with a 90's R&B sound produced by Ayo , Keys, and ENT, talks about Tiller making a plea to his girl. Listen!
After a little tease on Instagram, M.I.A. released her new song "Borders" today. The well known rebellious rapper talks about social and political issues on her new record. Listen to it on Spotify as she questions values, family, and history.
The new Columbian songstress took it back to her roots in this self directed video. Kali tours through her homeland of Columbia in 'Ridin Round' with cool vibes. When asked about the concept of the video, she says: "'Ridin Round' is about accepting your past and everything you are, even the not so good parts. I wanted to highlight where I'm from (in Colombia), my culture, and real people. There are no actors, the family in the video is my family. We filmed the parade on the street I used to live on when I was little." Catch this song on her melodic, not too pop, not too R&B album Por Vida.
